Jared finally got assigned a base with his new job. He is flying out of Chicago, Illinois. With the initial base placement, the company paid for Jared to have a hotel for 3 nights. We took advantage of the free hotel and flew out to meet Jared in Chicago.
It was an early start for the kids and I. Our flight was at 8 in the morning, so that meant we had to wake up around 5am. The kids did great on the flight. We made it to our hotel (which was near the airport) for lunch and to unpack.
Then we decided to head into the city. The kids LOVED riding the train at first, but then passed out pretty quickly. They were SO tired from waking up so early!
Because our free hotel was by the airport, it took about a 40 minute train ride to get into the city.
Jared thought this looked like it could have been taken back in the 40s.
Michigan Ave.
Our first stop was Millennium Park, which is the location of "the bean" whose official name is the Cloud Gate.
It was FREEZING!!! My kids were SO grumpy because they were beyond cold! The days before we arrived, the temperatures were low 40s, it even hit 50. The day we arrived the high was 20' with a super cold wind.
It's made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. Its an odd sculpture, but is now becoming a VERY popular selfie spot!
Then we headed to the Water Tower shopping center on Michigan Ave.
P was VERY excited about the Lego store.

R was VERY excited about the 2 story American Girl Place store.
I snuck her American Girl doll in our backpack when we headed into the city.
She was able to get her doll's ears pierced!
Whoever designed this shopping center wasn't dumb.
Putting the Lego store RIGHT NEXT to the American Girl Store was pure genius!
The kids had a little more spunk on the train ride back!

Because the airport station was the last on the line.
We usually had the whole car to ourselves!
All and all we had a great first day in Chicago. A few meltdowns from the kids because of the cold, but they were pretty good troopers!
